Laboratory tests
Blood samples are taken at the clinic. Here you will find how tests are chosen, how to give samples correctly and how to understand the results.
Tests for kidney function
Chronic kidney disease often develops without symptoms. Two simple tests — eGFR from blood creatinine and the urine albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) — are the basis of assessment.
CA 15-3
CA 15-3 is a tumor marker in the blood used mainly to follow the response to treatment in some patients with metastatic breast cancer. It is not a test to detect cancer in people without symptoms.
Sample collection
A correctly collected and transported sample is the first condition for a reliable result. Practical guidance for blood, urine (including 24-hour), stool and genital samples.
How to understand your tests
Laboratory tests are valuable when they are chosen for a clear clinical question and interpreted by the doctor together with symptoms and examination. A value outside the normal range is not a diagnosis in itself.
Guide to laboratory tests
An overview of the main groups of laboratory tests — what each one measures and when it makes sense. It is not a list to be done in full; the doctor chooses the ones your clinical question needs.
Do you have tests done elsewhere?
Bring them to your visit: the specialist will explain what they mean for you. For glucose, lipid profile and some other tests, come fasting (8–12 hours without food; water is allowed).
